PROGRAM 6 • APRIL 2017 • Masters Series

Saturday, April 29, 2017 at 8pm | Regent Theatre (Oshawa)

FOR THE LOVE OF MOZART!  Presented by: Edmond & Sylvia Vanhaverbeke

OP’s final program is a triple shot of Mozart – 2 piano concertos - 2 pianists - 1 stage:  Jean Desmarais, Maria Sourjko and Ontario Philharmonic.
On May 17, 1784 Mozart’s expense book reveals the purchase of a European starling from a Viennese pet shop for 34 Kreutzer (about 38 cents). The birds are known for uncommon abilities to mimic musical patterns. Mozart’s soon learned to ‘tweet’ several measures from the Finale of the Piano Concerto No. 17 – brings new meaning to “twitter”.
In 1967, Swedish film, Elvira Madigan garnered awards from Cannes Film Festival and Golden Globe Awards. The soundtrack was taken directly from the Andante movement of Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 21. The entire work has been nicknamed the “Elvira Madigan” concerto as a result. The film is long forgotten: the music remains one of the most recognizable melodies.
Mozart’s ‘Haffner’ started life as a commissioned piece for Marie Haffner’s wedding, daughter of Salzburg’s mayor. As a result, it became known as the ‘Haffner Serenade’, a hugely popular work originally scored in eight movements in 1776.  It took until 1782 for the Haffner Symphony as we know it to emerge - a work of unparalleled grandeur.
